A method for removing carbon dioxide directly from ambient air, using a sorbent under ambient conditions, to obtain relatively pure CO2. The CO2 is removed from the sorbent using process heat, preferably in the form of steam, at a temperature in the range of not greater than about 130° C., to capture the relatively pure CO2 and to regenerate the sorbent for repeated use. Increased efficiency can be achieved by admixing with the ambient air, prior to contacting the sorbent, a minor amount of a preferably pretreated effluent gas containing a higher concentration of carbon dioxide. The captured carbon dioxide can be stored for further use, or sequestered permanently. The above method provides purified carbon dioxide for further use in agriculture and chemical processes, or for permanent sequestration.

1. A method capable of capturing carbon dioxide from ambient air under ambient conditions, the method comprising the steps of: providing energy to a primary production process which produces a primary product with co-generated usable process heat, applying the co-generated process heat from said primary process to generate process heat steam superheated at ambient pressure,alternately repeatedly exposing a sorbent to capturing and stripping/regeneration system stages, the stages comprising:initially admixing a minor quantity of treated effluent gases with a substantially larger quantity of ambient air flow to form an ambient air-effluent gas mixture containing a minor quantity of the effluent gases;during the capture stage, exposing said sorbent to a flow of the ambient air-effluent gas mixture, so as to enable said sorbent to capture carbon dioxide from said ambient air and form CO2-laden sorbent, andduring the stripping/regeneration phase, in a sealed regeneration chamber containing the CO2-laden sorbent, withdrawing air or any other gas entering the sealed regeneration chamber with the CO2-laden sorbent to form at least a partial vacuum, passing the process heat steam into the sealed regeneration chamber and exposing said CO2-laden sorbent to said process heat steam, so as to cause the stripping of such captured carbon dioxide from the sorbent, resulting in a regenerated sorbent, and forming a carbon dioxide/water exiting mixture.
